Niall Ross • Tenor Saxphone

Niall played violin in orchestras in Scotland throughout his youth. Subsequently, switching to saxophone, flute and clarinet, and living in Wales, he played a wide range of musical styles, including:

  • 5 years in a swing jazz big-band,
  • 6 years in a successful local rock band (including devising and performing music for theatrical shows),
  • small group work with jazz pianist Pete Beresford (including work with Lol Coxhill, Rico Rodriguez, Satch Dixon).

During this time he also worked as a peripatetic woodwind teacher in local schools, and was musical director for Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre.

Since moving to London Niall has worked with

  • Grand Union Orchestra (jazz/world music/communitybased projects, featuring a number of internationally renowned jazz musicians);
  • TheUnknown (specialist rock group for musicians with learning difficulties);
  • London School of Samba,and Comparsa Conga de Londres (both latin percussion groups);
  • the Clarke Sisters(contemporary flavoured Irish music); and
  • a project to revive the music of alto player Earl Bostic.
